I’d never experienced any problems with my eyesight until the age of 30. (I’m now 37.) Then my left eye began getting weaker while my right has always worked perfectly. Seeing that the right eye dominated over the other, my brain continued to prefer it over the left eye. Consequently I could see well but was constantly bothered by this.
My left eye’s vision was corrected through eyeglasses yet, nonetheless it was imperfect-I’d say it was almost dirty. It didn’t make sense to me that it should deteriorate so quickly unless something pathological was happening.
Over the next few years, I went to several different ophthalmologists (each one prescribed different lenses) until I found one who did a corneal topography…the result showed a very slight case of keratoconus in the left eye. He gave me the same possible solutions (use of eyeglasses, rigid contact lenses or INTACS) … but just the same said I might one day need to undergo corneal transplant.
Seeing that the thought of a transplant didn’t appeal to me at all, and since I’m curious by nature, I began surfing the web in all directions under the topic EYESIGHT. I spent a month researching and studying. Then I met a person who had undergone Mini ARK with Dr. Abbondanza. I made an appointment with Dr. Abbondanza and the same day of the visit set the date for the operation.
The operation took place in February of 2003; it only lasted a few minutes, was painless and recovery took 10 days. Since then vision in my left eye keeps improving.
Considering that my right eye has 10/10 vision and my left has 7/10, I consider myself to be a person “without eyesight problems”…thanks to Dr. Abbondanza and Mini ARK.
Should problems with keratoconus arise in my right eye, we’ll know exactly how to handle it.
Along with regaining eyesight (which is essential), my cornea is also returning to normal. Whereas before the operation the idea of a transplant was on my mind for the future, today we can say that this is very improbable.
It’s only when I write letters like this that I remember having had keratoconus. Normally I don’t even think about it.
Since you probably won’t find a doctor who’ll encourage you to have this operation or maybe you won’t find one who’ll know much about it, you’ll need a little courage and determination to go through with it…don’t let this scare you though. Just remember that someone once said the earth was flat and was ready to burn anyone who went against that saying!!
