Concetta Fruccio

I’m a 32 year old girl. In 1988 I found out that I had Bilateral Keratoconus. Although suffering much discomfort, I could see with hard corneal lenses. Many times I would suffer from conjunctivitis inflammation and have a poor time tolerating the lenses but went on like that until 2001 when I reached an advanced stage of the illness (I’d say I was practically ready to undergo transplant). I went to several doctors and would hear the same thing over and over again, “try to go as long as you can like this and then we’ll perform corneal transplant”, neglecting the damage those horrible rigid lenses were causing me. My life continued like this until I met Dr. Abbondanza. Although skeptical I made an appointment and during that visit he explained the way surgery would avoid corneal transplant. My trust immediately grew in this doctor who demonstrated not only his professional side but a deep understanding of my condition.
A few months later I underwent surgery followed by touch-ups a few months apart, bringing me increasing improvements. (Before undergoing surgery, it was impossible to calculate my eyesight since I couldn’t see at all without lenses.) My life has changed; I can finally see things that I couldn’t for so long. When I use soft contact lenses or eyeglasses I can work, drive (even at night) and basically lead a normal life without feeling that it’s my eyes that condition the way I live. But most of all, I avoided corneal transplant and its consequences.
