Sara Innocenzi
My name is Sara Innocenzi, I’m 37 years old and in June 2002 Dr. Abbondanza operated both my eyes for keratoconus. The following September I underwent a slight touch-up to the left eye. Ever since I was 6, I’ve been astigmatic and have worn eyeglasses. When myopia set in at age 20, I became a “faithful” soft contact lens user. Two years ago I was diagnosed as having keratoconus in both eyes.
Since my doctors were against soft lenses and had advised me to limit eyeglass use, the only possible alternative was hard lenses. These would give good vision while at the same time help therapeutically since they could prevent the illness’ progress.
My problem was that I couldn’t tolerate hard lenses for more than two hours a day for lack of tear glands. Consequently, I suffered practical problems which then took a toll on the quality of my life.
I decided to find out more about this illness since all the ophthalmologists I’d been to had advised me to use hard contact lenses and as a last resort to have a corneal transplant!
Finally while surfing the net and then through word of mouth, I found Dr. Abbondanza.
I have to confess that at the beginning I was very worried and uncertain since other doctors I had contacted had not reassured me. I finally made up my mind and now, seven months after the first operation I don’t wear lenses or glasses. I drive, read, use the computer and am happy that I didn’t listen to those who tried to advise me to not go through with it.
